Altar Linens

The purificator is the small linen cloth used by the priest to wipe the chalice and his fingers during the purification rite of the Mass. This version is woven from fine Italian linen and finished by hand with a narrow hemstitched edge, a detail that keeps the border from fraying through repeated washing and folding. A small embroidered cross sits centered along one edge, marking the cloth in keeping with traditional liturgical practice.

Lightweight and absorbent, the linen is well suited to its function while still folding crisply for storage in the sacristy. Sized to standard dimensions, it pairs naturally with the chalice pall and corporal for a uniform set at the altar, and is equally suited to individual replacement when older purificators have worn through.

Each piece serves a distinct role in the celebration of Mass. The amice is tied around the neck and shoulders before the alb is put on, giving a clean finish at the collar. The corporal is spread on the altar to hold the chalice and host, traditionally catching any fragments of the consecrated host. The chalice pall covers the chalice to protect its contents during the liturgy. The purificator is used to wipe the chalice and the priest's fingers during purification, and the manuterge dries his hands during the lavabo, the ritual hand-washing before the Eucharistic Prayer.
