The chalice pall is the small, stiffened square that rests atop the chalice during Mass, protecting its contents and giving the altar setting its traditional finished appearance. This pall is covered in fine Italian linen over a firm insert that holds its shape through repeated use, with a hemstitched or lace border framing a centered embroidered cross.

The linen covering can be removed for laundering, while the stiffened structure keeps its crisp, flat profile at the altar. The corporal is spread on the altar to hold the chalice and host, traditionally catching any fragments of the consecrated host. The chalice pall covers the chalice to protect its contents during the liturgy. The purificator is used to wipe the chalice and the priest's fingers during purification, and the manuterge dries his hands during the lavabo, the ritual hand-washing before the Eucharistic Prayer.
